Formation of vacancy point-defects in hydroxyapatite nanobelts by selective incorporation of Fe3+ ions in Ca(II) sites. A CL and XPS study

We report a cathodoluminescence (CL) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of the formation calcium vacancies (VCa) hydroxyl ion (VOH) in hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanobelts selectively doped with Fe3+ ions by substituting Ca(II) HAp lattice. Additionally, we paramagnetic behavior Fe concentrations lower than 1 atomic percent (at.%), besides absence superparamagnetism even at around 12 at.%. XPS measurements demonstrated that incorporated into lattice specific substitution Ca2+ (II) ions, forming Fe-PO4 bonds. CL spectra obtained on HAp:Fe powders revealed doping promotes VCa VOH formation. propose generation paramagnetism samples is due to contribution both unpaired electrons O2− anions adjacent VCa.
